Let’s Explore the North Part of the Island!

After our stormy day at Secret Beach, which you can read about here, we decided we needed to redeem that day and explore the island again. The Monday following the storm, it was calm, sunny, and warm. So, we met up with some friends we met on the island, Steve and Bobbie, and set out to explore.

The island is 25 miles long from the north end to the south end, with the north end bordering Mexico. The city of San Pedro is toward the south side of the island with the north end being more rural with resorts sprinkled here and there.

We decided it would be fun to drive as far north as we could go. After some time, the paved road turns to dirt and remains that way for the rest of the drive. After a while, we reached a point where you have to drive along the beach. Watch out for turtle nests though, as they tend to lay their eggs on the shore.

It was a beautiful view, but I was sad to see all of the plastic that washes up on the shoreline. It’s crazy to think that all of this plastic isn’t waste from the island, it’s all coming from the ocean. Let’s all make a pledge today to keep our oceans clean and healthy and properly dispose of our waste!!

After almost 2 hours, we finally reached the point where the road ends. We parked the golf cart and donned our snorkel gear. It’s pretty cool because this is the spot where the reef basically meets the island, so it’s a short swim/walk out.

You can see how close the reef gets to the island here

I’ll be honest though, the water was very shallow, probably only 3 feet deep the entire way. And, while we saw a few fish and cool shells, it was mostly turtle-grass and me trying to stay afloat so as not to scrape the bottom or any coral. If I could do it over again, I would probably choose a different spot to snorkel. I’ve heard of a place a little further south that has a longer swim to the reef, but it’s deeper and has a beautiful beach. Maybe we will try that spot next time.

After snorkeling, it was time for lunch. We made the hour drive from the north part of the island to Secret Beach on the west side. Secret Beach is the most popular and nicest beach on the island with white sandy beaches and crystal clear, turquoise water.

We ate lunch at a restaurant called Happy Island that sits along the beach. I ordered their cheeseburger and Matt got the jerk chicken, both were sooooo good! After lunch, Steve and Bobbie took us to a tucked away, “secret” little dock built by a friend of theirs.

We snorkeled here and it was beautiful. I loved the endless sandy bottom and enjoyed swimming in the warm water. We stayed for a while and enjoyed fishing, swimming, snorkeling and hanging out.

After we had our fill for the day, we made the 45 minute ride back home. Our day was a huge success, from exploring the north part of the island to finding a beautiful dock to enjoy. We absolutely loved it and can’t wait to do it again!
