A Stormy Day at Secret Beach

After two weeks of ear infections and mainly staying inside, we had the idea to rent a golf cart and try our luck at exploring the island. Rumor had it that we were supposed to get a lot of rain that weekend, so we checked the forecast Thursday night which predicted lots of rain on the mainland, but not a single rain cloud over the island. We messaged a golf cart company to secure a golf cart for Friday morning. It rained all Thursday night, but we kept our hopes up that Friday would be clear.

Friday morning we packed and got ready for our fun day out of the house and picked up our golf cart. It was pretty breezy and there were some clouds, but the sky wasn’t looking too bad so we went for it. After we picked up up our golf cart we stopped back at the apartment to get a few things we left behind. As soon as we walked up the stairs and entered our apartment it started down-pouring all of a sudden. Check out the video below.

We immediately regretted our decision to rent a golf cart for the day and wished we had stayed in and did a popcorn and movie day, but carpe diem. So, after the rain slowed down to a drizzle, we hopped back in the cart donning our rain jackets and headed north.

We stopped at a cute place that sells all kinds of fresh goodies including meats, breads, ice creams, smoothies, fresh fruits and veggies, dairy, and more. We each ordered a fresh fruit smoothie and a meat pie for breakfast and it was delicious!

We hadn’t been this far north before, so we took our time enjoying the beautiful scenery. After some time, the houses and resorts grew further and further apart. We thought we must be getting close to Mexico at this point and checked where we were on the map. We were only about halfway up the coast! It’s crazy how slow you move in a golf cart, especially on a bumpy road.

Lots of mangroves (and crocs) in the lagoon

We decided to turn around at this point and head west to Secret Beach, the best and most popular beach on the island. It is usually very crowded so we hoped the rain would keep the crowds down.

When we arrived, we realized we were the only ones there. We walked along the beach and saw no others, except those working at the bars and restaurants. It started to sprinkle but the workers ushered us in, telling us to stay and make ourselves comfortable on their beach chairs. I knew they were hungry for any business on a rainy day like that. We settled our things on beach chairs and headed into the water. It was so warm, it felt like a bath. It was very welcoming with the rain coming down.

We swam out a little ways near some docks and then it started pouring rain, and I mean pouring. We swam under one of the docks for some shelter and stayed there for a couple of minutes before we heard the loudest crack of thunder and lightening right above us! That was it for me… I swam out of that water as fast as my legs would carry me.

We sat on the chairs for a few minutes hoping the rain would settle down again, but it wasn’t stopping, so we walked up to the bar and grabbed some lunch. We ordered grilled chicken nachos, and I’ll be honest, these were the best nachos I have ever tasted. The flavors harmonized so well together and there was so much flavor, it was delicious.

After lunch the rain still wasn’t letting up and I was getting a little chilled so we decided to head back to town since it is about a 40-45 minute ride. Once we got home we showered and hung out until it was time to go to dinner.

I had heard great things about a place up north called The Truck Stop. It’s comprised of 4 different restaurants each in a shipping container. There’s also a bar, a stage where they play live music, a hangout area with games like foosball, ping pong, giant connect four, and corn hole, plus a swimming pool complete with a projector movie screen and a small dock.

We invited our dive instructor, Chewy and his girlfriend, Lillian, to join us. The atmosphere was incredible with a really great live band playing and others coming to enjoy their Friday night. We ordered our first pizza and ice cream on the island and both were superb. We played a game of foosball, star gazed on the dock, and overall had a really great time.

So while the beach was kind of a bust, our evening turned out great, and we still got to explore much of the island. After all, we are in Paradise, and that’s pretty great!

Until next time!
