Backpacking In the High Uintas

A few years ago Matt and I went hiking in the High Uintas in Utah. We came across a trail named Wall Lake. It is a fairly short trail, being only about 2 miles roundtrip with little elevation gain and leads to a beautiful and secluded lake. We absolutely loved the hike and decided that it would make a good backpacking hike and we would love to backpack it the next time we were up there.

Well, that time came. Last weekend Matt and I backpacked to Wall Lake with some friends of ours, Tyler and Brea. We had the best time and enjoyed each others’ company and being in the outdoors.

On our way way up, we took the scenic route through the small town of Woodlands and then along a dirt road until we met up with Mirror Lake Highway. You can also take the more direct route through Kamas, but the other way is on a dirt road and is very beautiful and worth the detour.

We hiked about a mile in before reaching the lake, but the entire hike is so beautiful and lush and green. Matt and I being fairly new to backpacking, and Tyler and Brea not having done much backpacking either, it was a perfect trail for us. We all loved how quick and easy it was and how rewarding the view was at the end.

Once we got to the lake, we started hiking around the edge to find a good spot to set up camp. Because this trail is shorter, it is very popular among backpackers. There are plenty of sites to choose from, whether you want to be near the lake or tucked back a bit for some privacy.

We chose a large site with plenty of seating that overlooked the lake. It was near the trail but trees lining the outside of the site provided some privacy. We loved being close to the water as we got a beautiful view and it was convenient to wash dishes or fill up our bottles.

Once we set up camp we were ready to make dinner. We each had some Backpackers Country backpacking meals. It got chilly pretty quick so we gathered some wood and started up a fire. We relaxed, told stories, enjoyed the fire, and had a great time sitting under the stars.

When it came time to go to bed, the sleeping was a little rough. It was fairly cold out and Matt and I had a hard time keeping our feet warm, which in turn, resulted in us not getting much sleep. We got up the next morning and decided that we wouldn’t stay another night, but relax during the day and pack out in the afternoon.

That day we ate breakfast, made a fire, set up hammocks, ate some snacks, took some naps and enjoyed the warm afternoon.

Then it was time to go home. We packed up camp and headed back out. It was nice having to only hike a mile to the car. Backpacking takes a lot out of you, and those packs can get heavy!

On our way home, we stopped in the town of Heber at a place called “Granny’s Drive-in”. The food was pretty delicious. They serve burgers, fries and shakes. We got some of each and enjoyed every bite before heading home.

This trip made me realize how much I love our “normal camping,” and that I might prefer to stick to that over longer backpacking trips. But, it was so fun hanging out with friends and getting away for a couple of days.
